The Nearing Homestead presents:
Three Day Stone Wall Building Workshop at the Nearings Historic Homestead, August 1-3
Learn the Nearing’s techniques in this three day workshop with master stone wall builder and Nearing historian, Greg Joly. The Nearing’s are internationally famous for constructing their own stone houses in Vermont and Maine using Ernst Flagg’s slip form method. This hands-on intensive program will be at the Nearing’s historic homestead on walls worked on by Helen and Scott Nearing themselves. Joly will share instruction in foundation laying, slip form stone wall construction and pointing.
Participants are invited to camp in the same field where thousands of back to the landers came to work with and learn from the Nearings.
Join us for a hands-on, heritage-rich weekend in the spirit of Scott and Helen Nearing at their legendary homestead in Harborside. Set amidst the quiet resilience of coastal Maine, this 3-day workshop invites you to learn the timeless craft of stone wall building—honoring both the land and legacy of intentional living.
Led by experienced builders and guided by the Nearings’ ethic of self-reliance and simplicity, you’ll gain foundational skills in dry-stone wall construction while helping restore essential garden walls on this historic back-to-the-land site.
